Abstract

To introduce a story and provide a good model of reading fluency, teachers commonly use the CD that accompanies the basal reading series. This CD is an audio version of the basal story recited by a professional reader. While the CD is an excellent model of reading, young learners squirm in their seats, play with items within their desks, daydream, or have their books open to the wrong page in the basal reader. To overcome the lack of attentiveness, basal reading stories were digitalized and the sound file of the professional was inserted to create a computer experience, thus eliminating the use of the basal. The study investigated if a difference in on-task behavior existed between using the CD with the basal reader or using the computer generated story. Also, the study examined if a significant difference was found between the comprehension scores of the two delivery methods.
