Abstract

Mobile technologies are becoming increasingly available in K-12 classrooms, based, in large part, on 1-to-1 initiatives being implemented by school districts across the country, and, in specific cases by entire states and nations. The availability of hardware paired with the significant number of applications and software accessible by students that are designed for collaboration, creation, critical thinking and communication, open new possibilities in terms of pedagogy, student participation and overall instructional design. Shifting curricular and instructional practices based on the use of digital technologies in 1-to-1 classrooms requires the utilization of cloud computing and application/software solutions designed for practical implementation in K-12 environments. The purpose of this brief paper is to explore new opportunities digital assets may afford for designing K-12 instruction that is truly collaborative, and creative in nature. Modern technologies can be found to be beneficial in learning environments, however, not only the right tools have to be available for students and teachers, but also the appropriate instructional practices must be defined in order for students to truly benefit from the use of ubiquitous digital assets in Kindergarten through 12th grade classrooms.
