Abstract

Because most teachers do not use technology effectively in their teaching, most preservice students have not experienced a good model that they can emulate. If preservice programs can replace these poor models that students experienced in their K-12 years with more effective models, then perhaps the new generation of teachers will be better prepared to use technology effectively in their teaching. This presentation will present theories that support two kinds of modeling, live and video modeling, and through video, photos, and discussion, we will explain each of the live modeling sessions that we use in our preservice course, and we will discuss ideas for how to prepare, conduct, and assess effective live modeling sessions. We will also discuss our development of a database of online video case studies, and explain our methods for using video models in class assignments. Finally, we will present research from a study currently underway to understand the potential impact of live modeling techniques on preservice teachers.
