Abstract

Online collaborative learning (OCL) has possible impact on cognitive as well as social and emotional aspects of the human learning. The majority of studies on OCL, however, have focused on cognitive aspect only. This study investigated various learning aspects and their predicting variables in OCL. Based on the previous research, learning achievement, satisfaction and perceived trust are three outcome variables selected to host cognitive, emotional and social aspect of learning. Collaboration preference and learning presence with 3 types of cognitive, social and emotional presence are selected as predictors or mediators of learning outcomes. 47 undergraduate and 6 graduate students enrolled in a course in spring semester of 2011 were participants. The Results showed collaboration preference predicted satisfaction and perceived trust. Cognitive presence mediated collaboration preference and satisfaction. It also mediated collaboration preference and perceived trust. Finally, social presence mediated collaboration preference and perceived trust.
