Abstract

There is widespread interest in using a 3D virtual world in many contexts, including education. However, few scientific studies have been conducted assessing the impact of virtual graphic interfaces in distance learning. Since February 2003, a study with Canadian participants is underway which aims to measure the impact of the SmartVR 3D interface with avatars, on their motivation and their sense of belonging in the context of distance education. To facilitate the study, a portable computer was given to all students registered for a particular distance education course. The purpose of the following paper is to present the Learning Content Management System, the 3D virtual interface adapted from the SmartVR platform and used for the on-line course, as well as results from the study. Preliminary data show interesting results based on the learning styles of the participants, their motivation, their sense of belonging and their level of perseverance in the context of on-line learning.
