Emotional Intelligence and the Use of Web 2.0 Tools in Language Learning in Higher Education

Abstract
The ubiquity of the Internet infrastructure in Taiwan has provided college students great opportunities to access Web 2.0 tools 24/7. Among college students, the use of Web 2.0 tools in personal social life is prevalent but the level of use is unclear in academic schoolwork, such as language learning. Prior research studies found emotional intelligence (EI) significantly predicts the success of academic achievement and also that the EI skills were gender related. This study focuses on the investigation of the use of Web 2.0 tools for personal and academic purposes; in addition, the relationship among the use of these tools and EI subskills. Findings suggest that majority of the college students use Web 2.0 tools mainly for personal interests or social life. The EI domain leadership skills were positively significantly related to the use of wikis.
