Abstract

This study aims to develop an extensible collaborative learning agent (ECOLA) and evaluate the effects of the agent on learning outcomes. ECOLA consists of three main components: the monitoring agent that collects information on collaborative learning activities; the workplace database that stores the monitored data; and the facilitator agent that gives advice and sends alarm messages to promote participation. In order to evaluate the effects of the facilitator agent on learning achievement and the participation of the learner in the online collaborative learning process, the participants of this study, 34 undergraduate students, were joined in a network of online collaborative learning. Data were gathered for two weeks and analyzed using the t-test. According to our evaluation, the results indicated that the collaborative learning advice and alarm messages had an effect on group discussion achievement. The statistical reports of collaborative learning had effects on the participation of the learner in individual and group activities.
