Abstract

The objective of this research is to verify previously published survey data on the use of Information and Communication Technology in teaching, learning, assessment and management in the Gauteng province of South Africa. Quantitative and qualitative methodologies were part of an eclectic-mixed methods pragmatic research approach. Results of a UNESCO teacher ICT competencies framework survey were similar to the previous survey based on the Becta e-maturity framework. Factor analyses verified the integrity of the survey based on the Becta framework and identified three additional factors. However, the narratives analyses qualitatively told another story. The disparity between the quantitative and qualitative data may be related to two forms of measurement errors. It is argued that the survey method should always be used in conjunction with qualitative methodologies to bring out the complexities of a contemporary globalized society.
