Developing complex thinking skills in online learning environments

Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to report on the instructional strategies that were employed in a Web-based learning environment that was designed to facilitate the development of complex thinking skills in post-graduate learners. The authors developed specific criteria for developing Complex Thinking Skills after a thorough scrutiny of the literature. These criteria were used to design a web-based course for post-graduate learners. The findings suggest that instructional strategies can be successfully incorporated for the facilitation of complex thinking. When implemented with all the criteria defined in the design, it appears to provide an effective framework for the design of a Web-based learning environment for the acquisition of complex thinking skills. It can be concluded that there are many advantages to be gained from implementing instructional strategies in a manner that supports the construction of knowledge and enhances complex thinking development
