Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore whether the use of printed web based course materials can significantly reduce students' cognitive load and, subsequently, enhance learning achievement. Printed web based course materials are the web based course materials in the printout form. By use of the printed web based course materials, the process of integrating, verifying, and corroborating information from printouts should be much easier than from web pages retrieved from websites. The split attention and redundancy effects, and, subsequently, the cognitive load should be dramatically reduced in the case of using printed course materials. Thus, this study hypothesizes that the use of printed course materials will significantly reduce cognitive load and enhance learning achievement eventually.
