Abstract
This paper describes the creation of an online learning module for motivational interviewing (MI) as part of a larger design based research (DBR) study intended to contextualize the training of the skill through the application of the cognitive apprenticeship instructional model. A thorough description of the cycles of DBR are provided, including problem analysis, the design of the module in collaboration with a certified MI trainer, development and pilot testing of an initial prototype, and decisions regarding future directions of the project in response to feedback from the learners. The paper emphasizes the iterative nature of the design process, as well as the explicit connections between the instructional need, the design decisions, and the principles of the cognitive apprenticeship model in accordance with the overarching goal of DBR to align theory with practice.
