Abstract

This paper reports a pilot study using a MOOC platform in a part-time teacher education programme. Even though MOOC platforms are developed to deliver online learning courses to thousands of people, the technology and pedagogical scaffolding integrated in the platforms, have a potential that is of interest also for campus-based courses. In brief, for those students who used the platform it worked to structure their reading and give the seminars and the lectures an important context. However, many students chose to not use the platform, or used it suboptimally. The paper explores why students hesitate to participate and interact in this kind of environment as well as our strategies to encourage the students to a higher level of participation and interaction and thus strengthen their possibilities for deeper learning.
