Abstract
According to Hargrave and Hsu (2000), the majority of teacher preparation programs offer only one course in developing technology skills. There might be only one course, but there are usually many different levels of technology abilities among the students taking the course. This reality frustrates many students because instructors often try to find a happy medium that doesn't meet many of the students' needs. For example, inexperienced students may feel like they are being left far behind in the class while more experienced students can become bored with the simplicity and slow pace of a course that attempts to scaffold the struggling students. One teacher cannot meet the needs of all of these students. A possible solution could be the implementation of a technology prerequisite. This paper and presentation outlines the design process as a team of instructional designers created an online technology assessment at one university. The prerequisite will go into effect in Fall 2004.
