Abstract

Abstract: Teachers’ competency to fully perceive, analyze and diagnose a pedagogical situation is a crucial basic foundation for their classroom performance and a possible starting point for professional development. The empirical study presented here examines how to promote this competency to diagnose pedagogical situations among pre-service teachers. Different forms of instructional support based on the principles of Cognitive Flexibility Theory – namely (not) given conceptual knowledge / (not) given multiple perspectives – are implemented in a computer-supported video-case-based learning environment and their effects are investigated. 104 prospective teachers participated in this 2x2 factorial quasi-experimental pre-post-intervention study. Results show significant effects of different forms of instructional support on different components of the competency to diagnose pedagogical situations.
