Abstract

Abstract: Higher education administrative commitments to virtual worlds validate these new conceptually different teaching and learning environments as viable options for the twenty-first century. This paper asserts that positive administrative support represents a conclusion that this initiative requires a validation of faculty needs in four major areas: vision; "voiced," financial and human resource support; access; and provision of time for reflection, conceptualization, technical building, teaching, evaluation and revision or reconceptualization. This paper proposes that a significant, sustainable administrative commitment to virtual worlds is based upon a shared administration-faculty vision of virtual worlds as authentic teaching and learning formats across disciplines and upon an understanding of the learning characteristics of students.
