Abstract

In education and training, instructional computer-based simulations allow learners to interact with the model of a system and help them conceptualize complex and abstract concepts. Ideally, computer-based simulations help learners develop deeper knowledge and more reflective thinking. This paper discusses instructional computer-based simulations from an instructional design perspective. In this paper, the researcher addresses the role of instructional computer-based simulations in education and training, including the advantages and disadvantages of this type of educational technology strategy. Additionally, the researcher discusses a framework for designing instructional computer-based simulations that considers design affordances such as the simulation scenario, interface development, and level of fidelity. This paper provides an overview of instructional computer-based simulations and discusses key design principles for enhancing their effectiveness.
