Abstract

The business of higher education may be learning, but the idea of competing in the marketplace remains elusive for most academic programs. While MOOCs are getting a high degree of media hype, the underlying partnerships with for-profit corporations have raised concerns about quality, faculty control, student support, and sustainability. Despite predictions of disruption from such new technologies, higher education is unlikely to disappear but will surely need to make adjustments. This includes recognizing the power of emerging technologies to enhance the student experience as well as continuing to innovate with novel pedagogies that may be applied beyond the usual classroom, course, and degree structures. In this paper, a case study is presented of how one university program in educational technology at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa is applying what research shows works for student learning while employing a more entrepreneurial model for distance education.
