Abstract
This paper describes the management of remote mediation using Skype in self organized learning environments [SOLEs]. These developed in the context of the “Hole in the wall” experiments which had showed that, given the facilities, groups of children from disadvantaged and remote settings can learn to use computers and access internet resources, on their own. The SOLEs use techniques and strategies designed to facilitate academic learning of children in underprivileged and resource poor remote settings. These remote presence mediation sessions are the latest innovation in the SOLEs and are in the process of being developed as a model [SOMEs – Self Organized Mediation Environments] for use in future SOLEs. The essence of effective SOME sessions and what needs to be done to achieve these is described.
