Abstract

Technology has changed the methods of education in K-12. This paper describes a workshop performed in a city in Japan, where educators - members of Code for Nara, grass-roots group for solving social issues with information technology, in Nara, Japan- organized and prepared a workshop of mapping a park for K-2 graders. Our main goal was to design a technology activity for children in that age group that is informative, educational, and interesting enough for them to maintain their focus and concentration throughout the activity’s three-hour span. Additionally, making sure that the activity is fun and enjoyable by the children was part of our main goal. The children are introduced to the digital world through the usage of cameras to map objects in the park. Each child takes pictures of round objects in the park. As a follow-up activity, the children print the photos on a poster paper and explain it. Furthermore, the workshop teaches the children how to select the best images from the ones they captured to include in their poster. Our second goal was to make use of digital technology to produce informative content with low-cost. Finally, we considered the case when the workshop is held in a place without Wi-Fi coverage available.
