Abstract

When teaching online courses, faculty are faced with the dual problems of teaching technology AND content to the learner. While this problem can be resolved with extensive coaching and help via e-mails and discussion boards in small-medium sized classes, it is a Herculean task to achieve this in large enrollment classes with 100+ students. Interdisciplinary Technology & Society is a required course at UT El Paso and traditionally exhibits large enrollments in the sections. Two of these sections are offered online with course caps ranging from 120-150 each. Over the period of six semesters, we have worked on methods to help the learners learn the technology and engage in learning content. We also incorporate some methods to reduce the grading and support load on the teaching team by incorporating a rewards structure into the course designed to create a self supporting community of learners. This best practices session will present some of the methods we have used to help manage learners and the class to create an effective community.
