Abstract

In this paper we present a work-in-progress project about how student teachers can use digital technology to redesign traditional work methods to create new opportunities for student active learning. One work method widely used in the Norwegian educational system to promote student active learning is Reading Workshop. Experiences from using this work method in teacher education in Norway show that it has untapped potential when it comes to student active learning. At the same time, emerging digital technologies may provide new opportunities for more student active learning. We describe how student teachers can use digital technology to re-design Reading Workshops to promote student active learning, and present an approach to how student teachers can design a Digital Reading Workshop by following three steps: Design and produce a Digital Reading Workshop (Step 1), Use and share a Digital Reading Workshop (Step 2) and Redesign a Digital Reading Workshop (Step3). Based on this three-step approach we discuss implications for teacher education when it comes to preparing future teachers for the ongoing need to re-design work methods according to new technological developments.
