Abstract

This research study examined the ways participants analyzed students' mathematical thinking in a Teaching Mathematics with Technology Massive Open Online Course for Educators. 179 discussion forum posts made by 35 highly engaged participants were analyzed to determine the focus of their attention. If the focus of the post was student thinking, the processes participants used to analyze student thinking were examined. Across units, participants' posts showed increased attention to student thinking and less focus on issues related to technology. When focused on student thinking, participants made more inferences about students and related what they viewed in the video in the course to their own students and teaching.
