Abstract

This article provides a summary report of the author’s doctoral action research study. The study redesigned classroom learning by combining the use of social and participatory media with face-to-face teaching. The use of social media provided students with both a formal and informal dynamic online learning environment where they could share their ideas and personal knowledge in ways that supported their classroom learning. Building a shared framework for learning was made possible by using the action research cycle to develop ways in which students could construct and share their skills and understandings. The teacher was also new to many of these practices and needed to work with the students as partners in the learning process. It was found that encouraging students to be active participants and venturing beyond the walls of the classroom can help to support students’ strengths and abilities.
