Abstract

In this paper we are studying how online learning environments can support teachers in their online work. First we outline a model which estimates the needs of teachers for different kinds of scaffolds in various stages of online work. This led us to extend our online conferencing system to cover the scaffold areas suggested by the model. These scaffolds were analyzed in an empirical study of teachers' actual work in two online courses using our conferencing system. Our analysis is based on in-depth interviews and system logs. We found out that the teachers used the scaffolds effectively and found many of them critical to the learning tasks. Teachers also stated that the scaffolds shifted the focus of their work from administrative routines to pedagogical planning.
