Abstract

This quantitative study, part of a larger mixed-methods study, focused specifically on investigating the influence on student achievement of class sets of Chromebook computers. In this case, a class set differs slightly from the more common 1:1 design; class sets of devices means that students have the device at their disposal throughout the entire school day, but do not take them home after school. Devices were provided to elementary and middle school classrooms across a medium-sized school district in the Pacific Northwest, and researchers examined data related to student achievement including scores on district-wide reading and math assessments, keyboarding assessments, 21st century skills assessments, and attendance records. Results from the study suggest the class sets of Chromebook devices significantly influenced student learning. However, research design and other limitations preclude any overstated connections between the integration of devices and outcomes of the pilot.
