Abstract

This paper presents the results of a qualitative study exploring the use of video and video production as a response to literature. As part of the English Literature Arts curriculum at a high school in the Midwestern United States, students independently read a book of their choosing in order to complete a character analysis. Rather than assigning the traditional written analysis, the teacher required students to demonstrate their understanding of the main character in their chosen book through the creation of a video analysis. In this paper, the authors examine the need for authentic integration of technology in secondary ELA, the difficulties of developing technology-rich curriculum, the potential for technology to engage students in new methods of literature response while addressing the new ELA Common Core Standards, and the implications of preparing secondary English teachers to address these elements in their future curriculum.
