Abstract

This paper reports on research conducted to determine Google Documents' suitability as a collaborative writing environment for students. A dual approach was used in this investigation. First, a set of criteria (coined The Essential Collaborative Writing Toolkit) was drawn from the research literature in order to evaluate collaborative writing environments. Google Documents was measured against these criteria in order to see if it adequately met the specifications needed for a successful collaborative writing environment. Second, students were interviewed to discover their experiences using Google Documents. A transcript analysis of these interviews was then made. Students' impressions of Google Documents were then synthesized with the results of seeing how well it met the standards of The Essential Collaborative Writing Toolkit.
