Abstract

This is a qualitative case study of 19 students’ experiences collaborating in web design course in a blended learning environment. The purpose of the study is to examine how collaborative learning in such an environment helps students to acquire the necessary skills in web design as well as enrich their learning experience and enhance their social or communicative abilities. The course was set to meet face-to-face once a week with the rest of the time for them to use online resources for discussion and step-by-step hands-on tutorials. During the face-to-face time, students were asked to work collaboratively on group projects or peer critique and group presentations. Qualitative data has been collected through the final reflection paper, course evaluation results and instructor observations. Results show that students are positive about the blended learning environment and enjoy collaborative learning. The online environment provides flexibility and allows them to revisit online tutorials at their own pace. The group work and active learning activities in face-to-face environments provide them opportunities to negotiate meaning and solve problems as well as to learn from each other.
