Must It Be This Way? Ten Rules for Keeping Your Audience Awake During Conferences

Abstract

In this paper, the author presents ten rules for keeping an audience engaged during conference presentations: (1) Think of your talk as an "advertisement" for your paper; (2) Choose your data selectively; (3) Present slides with boldfaced print no less than 32-point type size; (4) Never project a quotation without reading it to your audience; (5) Look at your audience; (6) If you have to read your text, practice; (7) Do not use Power Point unless you have read "The Cognitive Style of PowerPoint" (Tufte, 2003) and "PowerPoint Antidote" (Norvig, 2000); (8) Keep in mind that beginnings and ends matter most; (9) You may not say, "Just one more thing,"; and (10) Find some way--elegantly, gracefully, and memorably--to bring your talk to a conclusion.
