Abstract
Transitioning to postsecondary education from secondary school is an important and critical adjustment for young adults (Pascarella & Terenzini, 2005). Our research project is designed to leverage the use of virtual environments to support new students’ transition to postsecondary education. The overarching goal of this project is to contribute to our understanding of the underlying principles that promote successful student outcomes in virtual environments (VEs) in general and to produce a model of post-secondary orientation programs for VEs. As the preliminary phase of this larger project, we developed and piloted a virtual environment replication of the University of Alberta campus. This presentation describes our virtual orientation program development process in which we focused on three categories of considerations that need to be attended to during the development phase 1) technical considerations, 2) roles and skillsets of support personnel and 3) mechanisms for presenting specialized content in the environment.
