Abstract

Assessment is a time consuming activity and many computer systems have been developed to assist lecturers with assessment. Recent advances indicate that it is potentially possible to automatically grade free short text answers. However, these systems deal with technical not Human issues. Twelve interviews and sixteen teaching observations were carried out to find out about lecturers’ perceptions about assessment and assessment patterns used. Results show that lecturers find formative assessment a necessary yet time-consuming process, and usually resembles a continuous dialogue between lecturer and student. However, it also became apparent that current on-line tools for self-assessment do not enforce dialogue as such their main focus is to be used to test knowledge rather than deepening it. Based upon the findings, a system is introduced encouraging dialogue to support student learning and to ease lecturer workloads.
