Abstract

As part of our research into virtual reality (VR) and educational virtual environment, we built a learning system that realizes features and characteristics of both VR and role-playing based learning. The immersion, interaction and imagination features of VR stimulate learning motivations and help students visualize abstract concepts. Immersive environments provided by role-playing applications create a stronger sense of presence. It motivates and thereby causes learners to cognitively process course materials more deeply. Further, role-playing learning involves group interaction and enhances social skills. We apply this learning system to the discipline of human anatomy. Our system establishes a role-playing based virtual learning environment. Each student takes a role and learns under this environment. They can walk around, explore the scene, watch videos and images displayed in TV screen, listen to virtual instructor’s lecture and interact with any objects and other characters.
