Abstract

This paper presents results of a study into how to best identify, initiate, implement and maintain international partnership arrangements between international universities. The study will focus on partnerships between the University of Missouri, a Carnegie Research 1 institution and four university partners located in East Asia. The results of the study suggest that an important factor contributing to success in creating sustained partnerships are social networks, both formal and informal. Other results of the study are strategies to (1) overcome barriers resulting from geographical distance and from differences in culture and language, particularly using technology solutions; (2) initiate multiple-partner research, commercial and service projects; and (3) facilitate faculty and student knowledge exchange.
