Abstract

This paper will focus on the installation of our interactive environment, Smallab, at Herrera School for the Fine Arts in October 2006 and March 2007, and subsequent implementation of innovative pedagogical techniques within this space. At Herrera, we concentrated on the instruction of beginning dance composition as a framework for developing a hybrid curriculum that joins mediated, multimodal, interactive technologies with art-making and experiential construction. This paper will provide a detailed account of the Smallab environment, including its technical specifications and its innovations in collaborative, embodied and student-centered learning . We will also discuss, in detail, curriculum design, evaluation methods and assessment tools we implemented at Herrera and conclude with a discussion in reflection of this experience, accomplishments and failures and proposals for future Smallab installations, suggested curriculum design, resource management and teacher training.
