Will an Online Based Development Centre Optimize Teacher Graduation in Germany

Abstract
In Germany, for nearly 40 years the first stage of the teacher training program has basically been offered at universities and colleges. Students' graduation for the teaching profession is a public examination conducted by the state examination authorities or boards of the "Länder". In compliance with the "Bologna-process" (i.e. new European standards for tertiary education) the structures of the teacher training programs will also be adapted to the structures of the bachelor- and master study courses. Changes in methodical implementation and content areas are required. A topical position paper of the Ministries of Education frames this process (KMK, 2004): The requirements for teachers' tertiary education are (1) teaching, (2) evaluation, (3) innovation, (4) counselling and (5) education. With regard to this position paper the German University of Erlangen-Nuremberg is designing a new tool meant to modify and optimize teacher training in German universities.
