Abstract

This contribution introduces multimedia components to adaptive hypermedia systems. We extend text-centred adaptive presentation and navigation to software programs and present, by component type, matching adaptation methods and techniques. Methods include system-side adaptation of internal structures, graphics, interaction, and algorithms, and integrate smoothly into accepted classifications. We discuss techniques for each method and provide examples with AHES, a prototype educational hypermedia system. The system includes an XML markup for adaptive, component-based content, an adaptation layer for Java applets, and a PHP adaptation engine, each available for free.
