Abstract

One of the important considerations for preparing the pre-service teachers to use technology in their future classroom teaching is whether they have attainted a necessary level of information technology competency. In this paper, we analyse the entry information technology competency of 182 students by the disciplines they specialized in, which include Chinese language, English language, Mathematics, and the science subjects. We measure their competency in terms of capability in operating (1) presentation software (2) spreadsheet operation (3) image editing, and (4) Web-page production. This paper reports on data obtained from a test conducted prior to the start of a one-year Postgraduate Diploma in Education Programme, which reflects the entry information technology competency of these students.
