Abstract

Without a doubt, the Digital Age is revolutionizing the field of family and consumer sciences (FCS). New methods and spaces for human interaction and learning, mobile platforms that encourage anytime, anywhere connections, and a global economy increasingly shaped by virtual transactions demand that our research investigates the impact on family wellbeing. FCS professionals capitalize on the functionalities of digital media that make service delivery effective and efficient and that provide outreach in ways otherwise not possible. Yet the speed of technological innovation is so breathtakingly fast that it is hard for our research and scholarship to keep up (Aponte, 2009). And it is challenging for our professionals to feel confident in their abilities to use new technologies1 to meet the needs of those they serve (Godfrey & Duke, 2015; Purcell, Heaps, Buchanan, & Friedrich, 2013). Now is the time for our field to embrace this revolution in a coordinated way that addresses the need for new knowledge and for innovation in practice, yet allows us to remain steadfast in our support to professionals and to our diverse society.
