Abstract

In order to successfully implement the ‘Computer Science for All’ initiative, it is critical to provide elementary teachers with high quality and age appropriate curricula that can be easily implemented into elementary school classrooms. This paper describes the instructional design of a curriculum called “Creative Writing for Coding” that supports children to develop creative writing skills for coding in the Scratch programming environment, designed with three essential principles to: 1) find and express the student’s own ideas; 2) develop computational thinking; and 3) discover the joy of learning. A preliminary evaluation indicates positive outcomes, thus encouraging the designers to further develop an exemplary model for integrating computer science in the elementary education curriculum.
