Abstract

The Library of Congress has developed a comprehensive web site that has digitized historical documents from the Library's collections and made them available online to anyone. The American Memory Collections is one feature that helps educators use the over seven million digitized primary source documents in the classroom. But, along with this the Library of Congress web site provides many other features that are relevant for classroom use, and is especially focused on engaging learners in historical experiences. Utilizing the multilingual documents, country studies, biographies, teaching tools, document analysis tools, Thomas legislation information, developmentally appropriate instructional activities on the web site can make history real enhancing student interest and knowledge in historical events. This paper will survey these features of the Library of Congress web site as well as discuss ways in which teachers can incorporate these instructional tools into their classroom.
