Abstract

Game-based learning has shown to increase enjoyment, motivate, engage, and encourage learners to spend more time learning. The challenge is to determine how it influences the cognitive processing necessary to develop knowledge. The current body of research offers little empirical data on how game-based learning influences cognitive functions like working memory transfer. There are, studies on the effects of commercial video game play and various cognitive functions. Some commercial game research has gone as far as identifying video game features that can influence specific types of cognition. This gap between commercial video game research and game-based learning can be bridged to design games for optimal learning.
