Abstract

A significant body of research presented the influences of studying abroad on second language learners’ development of intercultural competence, but only a few studies explored the impact on second language teachers. This study aims to probe into three Taiwanese English language teachers’ self-awareness of the changes in their intercultural competence during their sojourn in America. How the changes influence their beliefs in second language education was discussed. Photo-elicitation interview was adopted to delve into the participants’ self-reflections as well as the interaction with the English-speaking world. Protocols for analysis were obtained from the transcription of audio recordings and the photos provided by the participants. The results, in line with the findings in previous studies, visualized the participants’ inner world. The sojourn experiences broaden the participants’ vision and make the participants more willing to embrace intercultural competence teaching in the future.
