Abstract

Argumentation plays an important role in learning processes. However, due to the difficulties in modeling human cognitive processes with computers, there are few computer-based learning systems that facilitate argumentation dialogues between computer systems and learners. Based on the new "learning by arguing" paradigm and to explore new learning opportunities, this paper proposed a learning system with pedagogical agents as argumentative virtual learning companions. The learning companion proposed is able to automatically conduct argumentation dialogues with learners. A pilot study was conducted. It showed that there is a great potential of effective learning with argumentative virtual peers. The study also revealed several valuable points that help further designs of argumentative virtual companions.
