Abstract

The work-in-progress project is to implement computer-mediated tools in the EFL writing class in Taiwan. It aims to explore to what extents blog/wiki can be a medium of scaffolding to empower EFL writers and thus to enhance their writing process and writing outcomes. The enhancement of writing will be evaluated in the context of differences of EFL learners' educational backgrounds between senior high school and university levels and between English majors and non-English majors. Questionnaires are designed to examine students' attitudes, preferences, and experiences relevant to writing in the blog/wiki. The potential attribution of blog/wiki to writing is described and explained through two kinds of comparison: writing samples in the blog/wiki compared with paper-based writing samples in class and post-implementation writing tests compared with pre-tests. An integrated account of the results from quantitative and qualitative analyses will shed light on how blog/wiki can be best employed in the EFL writing class.
