Abstract

This paper describes an instructional tool to be demonstrated that tests the hypothesis that predicting the next event in a feature film at "teachable moments" that reveal cultural distinctions will improve students' intercultural competence. This "cultural tutor", developed with the new Flash version of the Cognitive Tutor Authoring Tools system, assists students in reflecting more deeply and gaining greater cultural understanding through noticing and self-explanation. The tutor allows instructors to author content that is personalized to their courses, utilizing film moments that they believe to be culturally relevant. It is currently being piloted in an online French classroom as part of a larger treatment that includes peer discussion in a blog format.
