Abstract

We present a preliminary report on a survey of approximately 1,500 secondary school students in Taipei and Shanghai. MISS (Multi-faceted Internet Survey System) was used to elicit responses describing patterns of use and beliefs about computers, computer-related education, and Internet technology. Survey responses included information on percentages of students using computers at home versus alternative sites such as "Internet cafes," utilization of computers for homework assignments, and student skills and preferences for computer use. Our report includes a brief description of the cultural, educational, and technological backgrounds of the two sites of the study. We explore implications for educational developments in China and Taiwan, as students rapidly gain access to computer and Internet technology. This report concludes with some general observations on patterns of change within technologically evolving societies.
