Abstract

This presentation will report on the results of an evaluation study targeting educational Apps that facilitate the learning of sight words. These words, which frequently appear in children’s reading materials, contribute significantly to reading fluency but often trouble emergent readers (Helman & Burns, 2008). The study not only establishes evidence-based evaluation criteria that educators may adopt when they select Apps for emergent readers, it also seeks to ascertain good practices (i.e., well-designed Apps) that may benefit these readers. While sharing evaluation criteria and educational Apps under investigation, this presentation will provide answers to the following questions: (a) what are the criteria that well-designed Apps for sight words must meet?, (b) what Apps are currently available for learning sight words?, and (c) how well do the Apps meet the evaluation criteria?
