Abstract

The increased demand of online courses has sparked an interest among researchers to find ways to make online learning more meaningful and personal. Though many instructor led online courses are being designed, much research is needed to know the determinants of successful teaching presence. This review investigates a) the best practices to establish teaching presence in an online course, and b) the role of Multimedia in supporting teaching presence. Findings summarize the best practices to enhance the teaching presence in online courses. This literature review informs online instructors and instructional designers about the teaching practices that lead to the development of Community of Inquiry and offers suggestion for further research.
