Abstract

A common possibility to initiate active information processing in multimedia instruction is to provide different complex and difficult learning tasks. Hence, the question of how to design and construct interactive learning tasks systematically is of critical interest for instructional designers. This paper proposes four dimensions (content, cognitive operations, interactivity, and formal aspects) that have to be taken into account during learning task construction. Furthermore, the Exercise Format (EF) and the EF-Editor, an authoring tool for the systematic construction of learning tasks, are presented. In order to support the construction of a variety of learning tasks, EF (a) allows the integration of various learning content, materials and media, (b) allows the preparation and combination of different item forms, and (c) provides instructional information as well as informative tutoring feedback for guiding self-regulated learning.
