Abstract

Abstract: This paper documents some popular websites and other online initiatives aimed at teaching English to children and adults in the context of educational reform and subsequent "English fever." It builds on research on the adaptation of popular magazines for teaching English to China’s 2001 government education policy reform. This occurred when globalization, decentralization and technology were transforming China. This study briefly compares these popular magazines with online learning. It concludes that educational reform was a timely catalyst that enabled the transformation of English-teaching materials into more effective “extensive” instruction in multiple learning platforms.
